THE CINNAMON PEELER  by Michael Ondaatje

If I were a cinnamon peeler
I would ride your bed
and leave the yellow bark dust
on your pillow.

Your breasts and shoulders would reek
you could never walk through markets
without the profession of my fingers
floating over you. The blind would
stumble certain of whom they approached
though you might bathe
under rain gutters, monsoon.

Here on the upper thigh
at this smooth pasture
neighbor to your hair
or the crease
that cuts your back. This ankle.
You will be known among strangers
as the cinnamon peeler's wife.

I could hardly glance at you
before marriage
never touch you
-- your keen nosed mother, your rough brothers.
I buried my hands
in saffron, disguised them
over smoking tar,
helped the honey gatherers...

When we swam once
I touched you in water
and our bodies remained free,
you could hold me and be blind of smell.
You climbed the bank and said

this is how you touch other women
the grasscutter's wife, the lime burner's daughter.
And you searched your arms
for the missing perfume.
and knew
what good is it
to be the lime burner's daughter
left with no trace
as if not spoken to in an act of love
as if wounded without the pleasure of scar.

You touched
your belly to my hands
in the dry air and said
I am the cinnamon
peeler's wife. Smell me.

I AM THE NEW BLACK

I don't know exactly what lined up for me to have such strong emotions about Tracy Morgan? I came across an old interview on NPR's Fresh Air over the weekend and was swallowed up. He talks about his book I Am the New Black, an autobiography of his life growing up. While I'm obviously a huge fan of his alter ego Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock....But the intensity that is present in his comedy transfers into every other emotion that did--I will admit--made me cry tears. Maybe a mixture of falling upon this interview and the overwhelming contents of the weekend events hit me just right, or maybe I'm just a bigger fool for celebrity than I thought. Either way, hit up this interview on NPR's website, I don't think you'll be sorry.
Speaking of celebrity, there was an awesome opportunity to see Bell Hooks on campus today. I was interested to see what she would bring to what seem like our meager campus--she didn't disappoint. She read from one of her new works, focusing a lot on the accountability that we don't always charge others with. I was also pleasantly surprised with her critiques of some recent major motion pictures, I won't say which. What is most important is that she was a powerful presence and I feel lucky to have witnessed her  address. While not quite as angry as she was in her earlier works, I'm so interested to see what she will bring to the table next. The press release for the event. Cheers.

HAPPY BDAY KELS BALLS!

Thank goodness this girl came home for the weekend....I say. Kelsey girl is one of those rare soulmate/sisters/spirit healer whatevers. It took only a few short minutes for us to fall in love all over again slash her to love the shit out of me and recharge my spiritual battery. She exudes a ridiculously celebratory energy....gorgeous. It is her bloody beautiful birthday and this girl deserves a perfect day if anyone did.
                                               Kels: right

For the bumkin, I decided to start her collection of
sign photographs from her world travels...

These are from a ten day blur in St. Maarten, where the beaches are beautiful and all of the animals have saggy boobs and skinny legs:

more of that is yet to come.

Angels cont.

I'd like to continue my discussion via post of Angels in America with a
link to Emmy's post of the HBO adaptation of Tony Kushner's brilliant
play. Emmy is one of the few I trust with things of this nature, she's a "safey."

Here's a little Trailer--let's get pumped...
