[this was a post I did for emmy back at the beginning of the month.... I'm happily recycling it. la-di-da!]

some weekend reading:

La Petite Zine - I came across this little gem, an online journal of what you call "flash fiction." I haven't done a lot of browsing in past issues, but I really enjoyed this piece by David Shumate:

                                                                   The Races of Man
We learned in elementary school that there were five races of man.
White. Black. Red. Yellow. And, as I recall, brown. We drew pictures
of them with their variously colored faces next to buildings we thought
might be their homes. I gave them lawn mowers and automobiles and
umbrellas. Though my teacher told me some only had huts where they
burned the dried feces of goats and cows to stay warm. There were also
those who carried their belongings around on camels and pitched tents in
the sand which seemed like an exciting life to me. We learned how some
of these people said Hello so if we came upon a caravan crossing the
street, we could be polite. We were introduced to their gods. Some were
angry all the time. Others had four arms and three heads and blue skin.
The kind of deity I wanted watching over me. With each lesson our world
became more complex. We were tested on Fridays. Once our teacher held
up a can of chop suey and asked what color of people would be likely to
eat it. I wrote down white people. Because my mother served it for dinner
on Tuesdays. I later learned that the correct answer was actually Yellow.

so far I've found this recent issue of La Petite Zine to be filled with some off-kilter poetry, a mess of non-sequitors, and a laundry list of... lists. If anything, it makes for quick adventurous weekend reading. Enjoy!

dream a little dream of me..........what a disaster.
Killer Whale To see a killer whale in your dream, indicates that you need to be more social or more vocal about something. Step up and speak up. Alternatively, the dream symbolizes spiritual guidance. You are ready to explore your emotions, but you need to make the connection between the conscious and unconscious aspects of yourself.
Shark To see a shark in your dream, indicates feelings of anger, hostility, and fierceness. You are undergoing a long and difficult emotional period and may be an emotional threat to yourself or to others. Perhaps, you are struggling with your individuality and independence, especially in some aspect of your relationship. Alternatively, a shark represents a person in your life who is greedy and unscrupulous. This person goes after what he or she wants with no regards to the well-being and sensitivity of others. Underwater To dream that you are underwater, suggests that you are being overcome with emotions and are in over your head regarding some situation. You need to gain greater control of your life. To dream that you are breathing underwater represents a retreat back into the womb. You want to return to a state where you were dependent and free from responsibilities. Perhaps you are feeling helpless, unable to fulfill your own needs and to care for yourself. Alternatively, breathing underwater is analogous to being submerged in your own emotions.
Cave To see or dream that you are in a cave symbolizes the womb and thus signify refuge, protection and concealment. To dream that you are walking in a dark cave represents an exploration of your unconscious mind. It signals self-discovery.
Walls To see a wall in your dream, signifies limitations, obstacles and boundaries. There is a barrier obstructing your progress. Alternatively, the wall indicates that you are too accustomed to your old habits and way of thinking. You feel stuck. To dream that you are building a wall refers to a bad relationship or childhood trauma. You are trying to keep others out for fear of getting hurt again.

*side note: who's seen Spellbound? huh, huh? if not, it's a must.

I have a pessimistic view of relationships. My view has always been that you talk about it with your friends, you scheme, you plot, and you see psychoanalysts. You see marriage counselors, get medicated, do everything they can, but in the end you have to luck out. It’s complete and total luck.

Howl

Last Friday, Alex Caldiero read Allen Ginsberg's Howl as celebration to the
55th anniversary of the first reading in 1955. It was haunting. Read about it.
It was incredible to see Caldiero actually lift the entire auditorium (and possibly the overflow) to stand and Howl together at the end this 'neo-bop opera in five acts.' I've read Howl at least a dozen times, but experiencing it hasn't ever reached a level this visceral/animal. But rather than write about it, I'd really suggest to read it on your own.

This was taken from Ginsberg's ca. loft in '97. Retarded. (in a good way)

IN A POSTMODERN FANTASY WORLD, I WROTE THIS

Don Delillo won the National Book Award for White Noise in 1985.
If I could pretend I wrote anything of genius, it would be this book.
